"There are plenty of movies without a single superhero in them. Go watch one." I think this is a big part of these sort of complaints about movies nowadays more generally. Even in a world with a hundred streaming options, people get trapped in a cycle where they're just passively consuming whatever's put in front of them, and they complain that something isn't to their taste when really they haven't put in any effort to develop that taste. I don't know.

yeah and it’s peculiar because it doesn’t really take *that* much effort to seek out other things. I watched The Untamed on Netflix, I literally just read the description, thought “this looks interesting” and clicked. I think some people have anxiety about not keeping up with the discourse, so they watch discourse objects that they end up hating (and know they’ll hate, and that’s kind of the point.) If engaging with/hating certain kinds of art is part of your individual identity expression it’s really hard to set that aside and just try to develop your own taste.

Great piece — also an aside, i rewatched Hunchback of Notre Dame a few weeks ago and i still don’t get how that movie was made. There’s 0% chance any modern Disney movie would get a creepy Frollo-style song (it’s a great song tho!)

The point about the ubiquity of sexual content in other media really is true, and gets lost in the 70s nostalgia of “back in my day we had to walk five miles uphill in the snow to see a boob.”

I am obsessed with the legends of “porno mag stash hidden in hollow tree” and other 70s stories

I experienced something kinda like this in the 90s, me and some friends coming across a stash in a trash can. Turn turn turn.
